The Practice
This is Storydwelling, a learning-to-listen-with-love posture in living, breathing, working, playing, conversing and collaborating in our all our spheres of influence and especially in our thinking as we look at the world in general and the people who inhabit it.
It’s noticing when an assumption or a quick judgment arises in our minds or a sudden reaction within our emotions. It’s being willing to be present and dwell in our own stories, to consider why that assumption exists to begin with. It’s openness to listen to the story that brought the other to where they are and to recognize the humanity in all.
As we have traveled and shared music both within a tent city and within wealthy suburbs; as we have been graciously hosted by generous hosts with a variety of backgrounds and stories; as we’ve shared time together, we feel that though our minds haven’t changed, WE have been changed.
True, some people will never come to the table but God help me to always pull out the chairs, pour the water glasses and pass the bread, to never give up hope for anyone and to welcome all who come, whether they are gracious or ornery.
This is Storydwelling.
